Standalone Installation

  1. Insert DVD into your computer.
  2. Run the installation file.
  3. The installation wizard will guide you through the installation. The installation wizard will ask you to choose an installation directory. By default, this is C:\Program Files(x86)\Essential Skills II.
  4. Run the Marks Manager application and create your classes and student accounts.
  5. The first time the Read to Succeed application is run, you will be prompted to enter your school’s license. Enter your license code found in your DVD packaging/email.

Basic Server Setup

To install Essential Skills software so that it runs from a server, with student data shared among all client workstations:

  1. Insert DVD into your server.
  2. Run the installation file on your server.
  3. The installation wizard will guide you through the installation. The installation wizard will ask you to choose an installation directory. By default, this is C:\Program Files(x86)\Essential Skills II.
  4. Ensure the installation folder is a mapped drive on your student’s workstations.
  5. Create an shortcut to the Student Assignments application to your student’s desktop from the server.
  6. Run the Marks Manager application and create your classes and student accounts.
  7. The first time the Read to Succeed application is run, you will be prompted to enter your school’s license. Enter your license code found in your DVD packaging/email.

In this configuration, all the program media files are served from the single server.

Note: The software will not function properly unless it has unrestricted permissions to its program and data folders. See the permissions guide for more information.

Mapping a Network Drive

  • Right click on ‘My Computer’ and select ‘Map Network Drive’.
  • Browse to your shared folder on the server and click ‘OK’.

Setting Permissions

Essential Skills software will not function properly unless it has unrestricted permissions to its program and data folders.

To set permissions, follow the instructions below. (You must be logged in as an administrator to give these rights.)

  1. Right click any associated program folder and select properties (The default installation folder is C:\Program Files(x86)\Essential Skills II).
  2. Click on the security tab found at the top of the properties window.
  3. Press the Edit button.
  4. Select your student user group or the group named Users from the group and user name list.
  5. Make sure a check mark exists in the Allow Full Control section of the system permissions window.
  6. Press the Apply button to save your changes.

  • Select ‘Network’ from the ‘Go’ menu in your finder.
  • Browse to your shared folder and double click on the folder (make sure to use the SMB file system).

  1. Select an associated program folder and press Command+I on your keyboard (The default installation folder is Essential Skills II in the Applications folder.
  2. Locate the sharing and permissions section at the bottom of the Info window.
  3. Select your student group and set their privileges to Read & Write.
  4. Click on the gear found at the bottom of the info window and select “Apply to enclosed items”. (Some OS versions may have a button labeled “Apply to enclosed items” instead of a gear. In this case simply click to button to apply the permissions to all child folders.)
