đź—˝ How NYC Public Schools Can Enable Access to Essential Skills
Guidance for NYC Public School administrators and technology teams on enabling access to Essential Skills through TeachHub.
Essential Skills is an approved instructional resource that appears as a tile in TeachHub.
If a teacher clicks the Essential Skills tile and sees a message indicating that access is not yet enabled, it simply means activation has not yet been completed for that school.
ℹ️ Key point: Access to Essential Skills through TeachHub is enabled at the school level in coordination with NYC Public Schools. Teachers cannot activate access on their own, but they can alert their school team that the tile is available.
🎓 Why a Teacher Might See an Access Message
Seeing an access message does not mean something is broken. It means the required school-level activation has not yet been completed.
TeachHub serves as the secure launch point, while activation ensures Essential Skills is authorized for staff and students at each school.
In short: the tile is visible, but the school has not yet been enabled to use Essential Skills.
⚙️ What School Administrators or Technology Teams Should Do
To enable access, a school administrator or designated technology contact may be asked to submit a request through the school’s standard NYCPS support channel (for example, SupportHub).
Typical steps include:
- Confirming the Essential Skills tile appears in TeachHub
- Submitting a request through the school’s standard NYCPS support process (e.g., SupportHub)
- Indicating that the school would like Essential Skills enabled for staff and students
NYC Public Schools coordinates activation with Essential Skills to ensure the school is properly set up and access through TeachHub functions as expected.
🔄 What Happens After the Request Is Submitted
Once the request is processed, access for the school will be activated.
- NYC Public Schools reviews and processes the request
- NYC Public Schools and Essential Skills coordinate to complete school setup
- The Essential Skills tile launches the application for staff and students
After activation, teachers and students can open Essential Skills directly from TeachHub without additional steps.
✉️ Optional: If a Teacher Is Helping Coordinate Internally
The message below can be shared internally with a school administrator or technology coordinator. This is optional and provided for convenience.
Sample message to share with your school team:
Hi, When I click the Essential Skills tile in TeachHub, I see a message indicating that access has not yet been enabled for our school. My understanding is that our school administrator or technology contact may need to submit a request through SupportHub or the appropriate NYCPS support channel to enable access to Essential Skills for our staff and students. Would someone be able to submit that request on behalf of our school? Thank you.

🧩 Helpful Notes

- Each school determines which instructional tools are enabled
- NYC Public Schools and Essential Skills coordinate setup once a request is submitted
- TeachHub remains the launch point after activation
Important: This page outlines general guidance. Schools should continue to follow current NYC Public Schools procedures and internal processes.
